Emily and the Writing CouchEmily and the Bank writing

This past winter I discovered that writing a book is a very solitary attempt.  I was on a tight schedule that requires I write at least a thousand words per day, seven days per week, for four months.  During that time every afternoon was my ass glued to what am I now come to call "my writing Bank" – a red Burgundy day-bed in the corner of our living room.  Just me, Emily, my purple laptop and a head full of information and an idea to synthesize a complex subject in a comprehensive, and clear, how-to guide.

While I had some communication with the Publisher during the writing process – usually around cover design and handle the marketing plan – we really dont have much until I about the manuscript turned on 1 March.  Since then, editors, graphic designers, layout artists and proofreaders who have come and gone ... but the book still just a project between new society publishers and myself felt.

Then one day she sent me a link to the formatted version of the book in PDF form and said "OK, its time to ask for notes."  What?  Do you mean that other people are going to read this?  Aquaponics people?  Famous authors?  The leaders of the industry of gardening?  You mean that I need to ask these people very busy, very accomplished if they would be willing to drop what they are reading, slog away all my 300 + page manuscript, and a 3-4 sentence approval in the next three weeks writing?   Oh, and I need to come up with the list itself?  Sip.

So I started with coming up with names of people who I thought might be prepared.  It included aquaponics leaders who I admire-Murray Hallam, Susanne friend, Charlie price, James Godsil and others.  I then went to people I knew in the world of hydroponics, including Dr. Howard Resh, the author of "Hydroponic food production" and several other important books about hydroponics grow.  Then the Permaculture and homesteading community leaders, including Sundari Kraft, author of "The Complete Idiots Guide to urban Homesteading."  I thought the following of famous people that I knew that dont really fall into any of these categories, but would have a valuable perspective on aquaponics, including Britta Riley, the leader of the movement window farms in NY City.

Finally there were the "Hail Marys".  These were the authors whose work I admired and which is very closely related with aquaponics, but that I had never met.  There were two of these that I introductory emails sent to (the Publisher handles the rest).  The person who was kind enough to answer was Paul Greenberg, who wrote the NY Times bestseller "four fish: the future of the last wild food".  Ironically, when I was writing my e-mail plea to Paul I was listening to his interview on NPRs fresh air.  It was a very strange experience.

I emailed 29 requests, and 22 replied that they are willing to read the book and if they found it, then support would be!  As if this wasnt amazing enough, decided 21 of the 22 not only support but have their quotes submitted by contemporary term (I just havent heard of the 22nd)!

I am so very grateful for the time that each one of these kind of people put in both my book to read and write reviews.  Words can hardly describe how blown away I am by all the wonderful things they have said.  I am really touched by the outpouring of generous support for this book, and for the global potential for aquaponics!  Thanks to all of you from the bottom of my heart.
